How do stock CFDs work?

  • Trading stocks involves buying and selling ownership of shares in various companies listed on exchanges such as the Australian Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. Usually stocks are traded without leverage and through stock exchanges. However, stock CFDs can be traded with leverage and can be traded over-the-counter (OTC). Participants can gain exposure to the shares of various companies and take positions in individual companies or designated sectors of the economy.
  • Participants often consider diversified investment strategies to spread unsystematic risks across multiple companies or sectors. Investors can choose to build defensive positions when volatility is anticipated. Similarly, investors can consider building a portfolio for growth strategies, covering small to mid-cap technology stocks.

Stock Trading Examples

Buy:Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL)

Buy

  • APPLE is trading at 150/152 and you think that APPLE will boost sales after releasing a new product. You decide to buy 100 shares of AAPL. For each contract, one point (price fluctuation of 1) equals $1.
  • Since there are 100 contracts, you will make $100 for every pip that the bid price of AAPL goes above 152, and you will lose $100 for every pip that the bid price goes down above 152.

Closing a Position

  • 1 month later, the sales volume is announced, the price of AAPL rises to 170/172, and you decide to take profit and sell 100 AAPL stock CFD contracts.
  • To calculate net profit, you must include any adjustments for financing or dividends. If you are 'long', you include interest, and if you are 'short', you deduct interest.
